Chapter 17

Asheron, 19 years old

I roll my eyes as music blasting from the speakers of a steel Humvee announces my team’s arrival a mile before they stop in front of me.

Fucking Muller and his love of seventies rock-and-roll. Give me some Linkin Park over that shit any day. Was he even born when the song came out? Highly doubtful.

We’re at a compound run by a Guild member. I left the others in La Jolla the minute my brother sent me the location of our meeting.

The boys wanted to make sure California hasn’t made me soft, so we’re going to be doing a combat drill to prove I can still handle my shit. Bunch of Jokers.

We were supposed to meet at 1:00 PM, but I got here early to get in target practice. We’ll be coordinating the rescue mission after.

The music cuts out when the two Humvees stop in front of me, and seven men dressed in black come out. FYI, if you’ve never seen a Guild warrior before, you should. It makes for quite a sight.

Unlike Sacha, who prefers to surround himself with Russian warriors, my brothers in arms come from different countries and have different skin colors. Elias wanted as many advantages in a fight as possible, so he chose a team based on their skills, not their nationality.

I haven’t spoken to some of them in two years. To say my teammates were pissed at me for leaving the Guild is putting it mildly.

“Privyet, connard.” The first person to welcome me is our machine gunner, Sebastien Bonnel, who speaks seven languages and is deadly with an RPK-74.

The fucker tries to punch me in the face the minute he comes out of the Humvee... and fails. I’m emancipated, not dead. I didn’t stop being a warrior simply because I got out.

I flip the bonehead on his back the minute I catch his fist, and the boys laugh when he grabs me in a hard hug.

The fake fight relaxes the tension between us, and the rest of my team welcomes me back one by one.

Larsen, our resident Viking, rifleman, and grenadier, lifts me in the air like I’m a child. At 6 feet 9, and 280 lbs. of muscles, Larsen is the tallest and strongest warrior on the team.

“What the fuck, Hunter? Only you would rejoin the Guild after fighting tooth and nails to get out,” he laughs.

Did I forget to mention Larsen has long blond hair he keeps in a man bun like a douche? If it weren’t for his heavy beard, he would look almost pretty. “Get a haircut, motherfucker. You look like a girl.”

On the other end of the spectrum, you have Jacob White, who is the smallest one of us at 5 ″9’, although what he lacks in height, he makes up for in muscles.

He was born in England and studying to become a doctor when his father was killed in a random terrorist attack, and he joined the warriors after that. When he isn’t infiltrating enemy cells, he acts as our medic.
